Best Knee Braces for Aging Skaters
If you're like me and started skateboarding many (many) years ago, then you also might be entering the stage in life where your knees are about as predictable as the Texas weather.
I grew up skating vert ramps and was sometimes the welcoming recipient of hand-me-down knee pads. But by the time they made their way to me, the velcro was barely sticking and the padding was more than halfway worn out. So I'd stuff old socks under the caps, hoping that would do the trick. Not quite. During mid-bail, the socks would often fall out and I'd hit the transition and knee slide just on the plastic cap (ouch!).
A lot of us might not know it, but we’ve likely developed a little bit — or a lot — of osteoarthritis. Last year, after performing the daredevil stunt of reaching under my desk to plug in my computer cord, I snapped my meniscus. Following the overpriced imaging, it was concluded that it was exacerbated by old injuries (from skating). While it sucked and, because I opted to do physical therapy instead of surgery, it took me out of commission on many parts of my life -- for over a year. But what helped me tremendously was a variety of knee sleeves and braces.
If you have a new or old injury, or just want to prevent one, here are a couple excellent knee braces (and sleeves) from Amazon that offer both support and flexibility!
